Sterling – munnar

Munnar was a wild and virgin landscape until Englishman, John Daniel Munro arrived here in 1870. Recognizing the potential of the place, Munro leased out the Kannan Devan hills from the Travancore royal family for Rs.3,000 a year. By 1879, the Europeans began cultivating coffee, cardamom, cinchona and sisal in the region.

Once known as the High Range of Travancore, Munnar today is the commercial hub for some of the world’s highest tea-growing estates. Munnar continues to be a carpet of green, thanks to its sprawling tea estates and forests. The rolling hills with mist clinging to the mountaintops is a sight that is synonymous with this part of God’s Own Country.
